Garnell ‘Pete’ Thomason, 84, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Lisbon, ND, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018, at his home in the loving care of the REM family and Altru Hospice.
Garnell ‘Pete’ Thomason, 84, of Devils Lake, ND, formerly of Lisbon, ND, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2018, at his home in the loving care of the REM family and Altru Hospice. Pete was born on July 25, 1933, to Amanda Thomason in Lisbon. In his younger years, he lived with his mother and five brothers in their family home. As a young man, one of his known jobs in Lisbon, was he was a grave digger. Later in his life, Pete lived in Grand Forks, ND, where he worked at Gramma Butterwicks Restaurant. He was at the State Hospital in Jamestown before coming to REM ND Devils Lake group home on Sept. 7, 2005. He remained at the same group home all the years he was in REM ND Services and participated in a day program at the group home. Pete was a strong willed guy who valued his independence, friends and family. Pete was very fond of his best friend Bernie, enjoyed visiting his brother Lyle and he developed close bonds with various staff members throughout the years. He was a talented basketball player and bowled in the Special Olympics. In his room, he displayed the many medals he won while playing in the Special Olympics. He was a football fan that enjoyed Monday Night Football and Super bowl parties with his house mates and staff. He liked watching TV game shows such as The Price is Right. Pete could be described as a definite car guy with his extensive knowledge in classic car memorabilia. One of his favorite events of the year was Devils Run weekend. He also enjoyed memorial weekend because he would visit his home town and place flowers on past family member’s graves. He was a knowledgeable man that enjoyed playing cards, drinking coffee, and visiting with others. Pete enjoyed going out for rides in the community, looking for horses and cows, watching air planes take off and watching construction of buildings. It is unknown if Pete has any other living family members. Preceding Pete in death was his mother and some of his siblings, including Lyle Thomason on March, 25, 2013. Funeral Services for Pete will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 2018, at 3 p.m. at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake. Burial will be at the Oakview Cemetery, Lisbon at a later date.
