Devils Lake wrestling had their season opener as they beat the Fargo South Bruins 50-19. Fargo South gave up 36 points due to forfeited points but that didn’t stop them from giving the Firebirds the challenge at the weights they did fill. Coaches Flynn and Bakke knew regardless of the open weights South presented, that the Bruins were still going to compete towards the team. “They have some solid wrestlers in there lower weights” Flynn referred to the Bruins rebuilding team.

The Firebirds had a rough time generating offense early in the duel but each wrestler went out and competed. “We need to find our offense and be confident in it.” As coach Flynn wanted that to be the lesson learned from this duel. Even though there were struggles in the losses Coach Flynn is grateful to take this duel as another note to work on the craft that’s missing in each individual wrestler.

Brayden Gerhardt started off the night with Devils Lake’s first win by making quick work of the Bruins Anish Bhujel. Pinning him in a solid 1:36 in the first period. Young Gerhardt is starting to build his experience with impressive wins. He looks forward to seeing the next challenge against Jamestown and Fargo North next week.

Parker Vilandre had a grit and grind match in the first two periods before asserting his endurance and prevailing against Fargo Souths Kevin Coyle (MD 15-7). Vilandre’s third period is what really determined the match as his opponent selected the bottom position going into the round. “I definitely feel more confident on top compared to last year.” As Vilandre controlled Coyle and ultimately guaranteeing his victory.

Colby Rance had one of the most dominant wins of the night as he was looking to put away South’s Sean Thompson. Unfortunately he couldn’t secure the pin or a tech fall, it’s still an impressive match considering Rance gave up 20 lbs. to secure this win. Rance really set the tone on his feet as he was controlling the hand fight and coming up on top of each scramble. Rance displayed true strength by overwhelming Thompson in this victory (MD 14-2).

“This is the time of year, over the holidays that I really need my team to come together as a family. That way they can go into each duel going forward and know what they have to do.” As Coach Flynn stressed to his team after this win. From here on you can definitely look to see the Firebirds clean up any flaws they have in their game, as Flynn is fully prepared to guide this young team in the right direction.

Devils Lake takes on Fargo North Spartans and Jamestown Blue Jays in a triangular duel on Thursday, Dec. 14 at the Sports Center.
