Through the years the car show has grow from its small local roots into the three-day spectacular event it has become.

The Devils Run No. 25 was certainly one for the record books with over 1,000 registered participants and at least twice that many in attendance.

According to Stan Orness, event organizer, it looks like the final number was 1,038 registered vehicles, and the Saturday evening steak fry fed 1,640 people. That doesn’t take into consideration the folks who ate at all the other food vendors that evening.

That makes it one of the biggest ever.

At Sunday’s closing ceremonies Orness and wife, Sharon, gave away 25 jackets they personally purchased with the Devils Run 25th Anniversary logo embroidered on them.

Despite the rumors, Orness says he’s not ready to quit, yet, and that got a cheer and a standing ovation from the crowd.

Through the years he has seen the car show grow from its  small local roots into the three-day spectacular event it has become.

He acknowledged the people who came to attend from quite a distance, including members of the Senior Rodders from Apache Junction and 15 individuals who winter in the same place in Arizona with the Ornesses.

“I am so honored that they all came this year to mark this special anniversary,” Orness said.

“It’s the people who come to the Devils Run that make it such a success,” he added, stating that he hears from people who visit from all over who rave about how friendly and accommodating Devils Lake is.

One attendee, Ralph Marquart, who came from Cottage Grove, Minn., had some trouble with the pickup towing his rare Ford Cayuse. He said that as soon as he’d gotten to town someone recommended he go to Lake Toyota and the mechanic there took the time on a Saturday morning to discover a minor sensor needed cleaning instead of an expensive repair job.

Marquart was so grateful he simply raved about his experience with Devils Lake and the people he’d encountered at Devils Run.

His is just one of many stories from people who come from  near and far who say the people they encounter here are the reason they keep coming back to Devils Run.

Orness says, “Next year’s dates for Devils Run No. 26 are June 1 - 3, 2018, same place, same location.”
