The sweep puts the Royals at 25-3 overall, 12-2 in conference, and undefeated (8-0) at home.

The Lake Region State College Royals softball squad kept their march through the Mon-Dak Conference in step Saturday with two dominant wins over Dawson Community College.

The Royals, who never trailed in either game, rode a huge performance by Hanna Gary, the game one pitcher. Gary notched nine Ks in the first matchup while also adding a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give the Royals a three-run lead, 5-2.

Though the Royals came away with the sweep, their play was a bit sloppy early on. A harmless popup to the catcher turned into an easy double play for Dawson in the second inning when the Royals baserunner wandered off of first base.

Two throwing errors in the top of the third led to an unearned Dawson run in the top of the third.

After the shaky play to start the doubleheader, the Royals regrouped. A single and two straight doubles gave the Royals a 3-1 lead in the bottom of third that they wouldn’t give up.

Gary picked up the game one win for the Royals in the relatively low-scoring game. Head coach Ben Morris pointed out the necessity of playing solid fundamental softball down the stretch.

"We haven't really needed to play much small ball this year, but in order to win these tough end of the season matchups every run early can make the difference,” Morris said.

The second game featured a dominant pitching performance from Royals hurler Amber Stewart, who struck out eight while giving up a lone run in the final inning to come up just short of a shutout.

Gary came through with a solo homer, and Tai Yamamoto added a two-run blast to help the Royals to an easy 9-1 win.

"Overall, we played well in all facets of the game and the momentum never switched from our favor during this double header,” Morris said. “We made the plays that came to us in the field and even a couple fantastic diving plays by the left side of the infield. Pitching, we are rolling right now and it is a great sign heading into the final warm-up stretch for the Regional Tournament in two weeks."

The sweep puts the Royals at 25-3 overall, 12-2 in conference, and undefeated (8-0) at home.

Sunday’s scheduled doubleheader at Dawson was cancelled due to weather. The Royals head to Bottineau for a doubleheader Saturday before returning home Sunday for two more against the Jacks.
