Authorities say a sheriff's deputy and a suspect have been killed in a shootout in Rolette.

A chase began in Devils Lake after the suspect allegedly stole a company truck from Mac's Hardware at about 5:15 p.m. yesterday. The truck was not owned by the store.

Police responded to a call about the stolen truck and embarked on a chase of the suspect from Devils Lake north to Rolette, and when officers caught up to the suspect, a shootout ensued.

Rolette County Sheriff’s deputy Colt Allery was killed during the shootout. The suspect was also killed, but his name has yet to be released.

The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case.

The sheriff's department says officials will hold a briefing Thursday morning.
