The sparkling new gym floor in the Devils Lake Sports Center was finally put to use Tuesday. And so far, it has a 1-0 record for the home team.
The Firebirds volleyball team (8-16, 3-12 EDC) took care of Grand Forks Central (4-21, 0-15) in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 25-17).
“We liked being back in here,” DL head coach Carla Freschette said. “As much as a court is a court, it feels like there is a lot more space in here. There’s a lot more room for the girls to move and I think that was nice for them.”
A balanced offensive attack had DL in control the whole match. Back-to-back Jenna Windjue and Averi Ziegler kills followed by a Windjue ace built a 10-7 lead for the Firebirds in the first set.
The lead held as DL began to pick up steam. Mattie Barendt had a big second set as the Firebirds cruised once again to a 25-21 set win.
Two Barendt kills early in the third set and an Alex Palmer ace saw DL open up a 9-4 lead.
Central hung around and trailed 20-16, but two straight kills from Windjue and Kyleigh Toso sparked a 4-0 run as DL completed the match sweep.
“We set goals for ourselves within each set to keep that lead,” Freschette said. “We didn’t really have much of a tipping game. We were aggressive for the most part and that was nice to see.”
DL had a balanced statsheet and shifted its lineup a bit, which saw some players getting more action.
The Firebirds had double-digit performances in kills (Barendt and Ziegler), assists (Windjue and Palmer) and digs (Windjue and Palmer).
“We had a lot of contributors in this match,” Freschette said. “Our digs, we were on and we were moving our feet. Our defense was awesome. And we were aggressive.”
