Milton was born September 22, 1941, in New Rockford, to John and Avanelle (Ryan) Hoyt. He was raised near Tolna and graduated from Tolna High school in 1959.  Milton graduated from Valley City State Teachers College in 1963 with a composite major in Business Education and English.  While at Valley City State he was honored with membership in Pi Omega Pi, an honorary fraternity in Business Education; and Kappa Delta Pi, the honorary organization for education majors.

In the fall of 1963, he accepted his first teaching position in Business Education at Mohall Public School and served as a classroom teacher for seven years.  In 1970, he became the high school principal in Mohall working alongside his dear friend and mentor, Mr. Donald Kolbo. Milton received his Masters Degree in Secondary School Administration in 1972 from the University of North Dakota.  During the summers from 1975-1987, he also worked as a summer claims adjuster for Farmers Union Insurance Company.  In 1987, he was selected to serve as the superintendent of Mohall High School and served in that position until his retirement in 2003 after 40 years of service to the Mohall school system.

Milton met his wife of 38 years, Carol (Gussiaas) during their early teaching years and they were married June 25, 1977. They raised two sons, John and Trevor. For some, Milton will be remembered as a teaching professional, administrator or maybe a disciplinarian, but for those that were closest to him he’ll be remembered as a devoted and selfless husband, father and grandfather.

Milton was involved in a variety of community and local activities including serving as president and secretary of the former Mohall Community Club, Chairman of the Mohall All-School Reunion Committee, Chairman of the Renville County Housing and Infrastructure Committee, President of the District Athletic Conference, St. Jerome’s Parish Council, member of the National and North Dakota School Administrators Association, and District 6 Republicans.
Milton often reminisced fondly about his many years of service to the Mohall school system and community.  He took great delight witnessing the successes of former students whether he was directly or indirectly involved with their education. He cherished the many friendships he made with so many individuals and teaching professionals that once shared Mohall as their home.

Milton is survived by his sons, John (Stephanie) Hoyt, Bismarck, and Trevor Hoyt, Mohall; granddaughter, Avery; and grandson, Evan; brothers, Luverne (Darlene) Hoyt, McHenry, Hartley (Judy) Hoyt, Jamestown, and Delane (Peggy) Hoyt, Tolna; sister, Artha (Harlan) Sigdahl, Aneta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
