The Devils Lake volleyball team had a tough time keeping up with Fargo Shanley, losing 3-0 at home Tuesday (20-25, 14-25, 14-25).
Despite promising starts to each set, the Firebirds fell behind midway through and couldn’t recover.
A 12-12 tie in the first set quickly turned to a 17-13 lead for Shanley. DL took a quick lead in the second set, but the Deacons put on several small runs to go up 2-0 in the match. Three straight kills by Jenna Windjue, Mattie Barendt and Olivia Light gave the Firebirds a 7-3 lead in the third set. Still holding on to a 9-6 lead after another Barendt kill, DL allowed a 5-0 run and Shanley never trailed from there en route to a match sweep.
Barendt led the Firebirds with eight kills, Averi Ziegler had two aces and Jenna Windjue had 16 assists.
DL is now 5-10 overall and 2-8 in the Eastern Dakota Conference.
