Gerald R. Maurseth, 76, of Cando, ND, passed away Thursday, September 8, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 14 at Cando Lutheran Church with Pastor Rick Craig officiating. Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 13 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando. Burial will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Cando.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.  Military Honors will be provided by the Hal Parker Post #79 Cando American Legion and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.

Pallbearers will be Kenneth Maurseth, Wayde Starr, Chad Starr, Waylan Starr, Brian Halvorson, Monty Wiertzema and Jeremy Booth.  Honorary pallbearers will be Dee’s Coffee Club, all Cando Bowlers, especially the youth bowlers and all his friends.  Music will be provided by Catherine Anfinson and Roberta Mundahl.
Gerald R. Maurseth, was born on June 9, 1940 in Aneta, ND to Harris and Kathryn (Halvorson) Maurseth.  Gerald graduated from Cando High School and attended Lake Region College in Devils Lake, ND.  He served in the North Dakota National Guard from February of 1956 to September 9, 1959 and February 1965 to February 1966.  He also served in the US Army from September 10, 1959 to September 9, 1961.  He received many awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Certificate of Achievement, Sharpshooter and M-1 Rifle and received an honorable discharge from the military.  Gerald served as the Towner County Auditor, sold advertising specialties and worked for Tri-County Supply.  He served as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service in Cando for 15 years, where he retired.

Gerald was a certified bowling coach and was inducted into the North Dakota Bowling Hall of Fame and also bowled a 299 game which he was very proud of accomplishing.  He received the North Dakota Marion Armey Award for outstanding service for youth bowling.  He was a member of AA for 44 years and a sponsor to many, Treasurer of the Pioneer Museum Board, held many offices for Sons of Norway Prairie Fjord Lodge in Cando, ND, a member of the American Legion, the Cando Ambulance, Treasurer of NARFE, a member of Cando Lutheran Church and a member of NRA.  Gerald also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins   and NASCAR.  

Gerald is survived by his wife, Gloria Maurseth of Cando; daughter, Darcy Blackwood of Texarkana, TX; brother, Leslie (Barbara) Maurseth of Peoria, AZ; sister, Marilyn (Dean) Anderson of New Rockford, ND; step-sisters, Sharon (Otto) Nelson of Egeland, ND; Sheila Schmidt of Bisbee, ND; Sue (Jim) Eggl of Fargo, ND and Diane (John) Hill of Valley City, ND; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Bill Starr; brother, Leland; step-brother, Allen Starr; and nephews, Jesse Booth and Nicholas Maurseth.

Memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.
