The postseason is here for the Devils Lake wrestling team. The Firebirds compete in the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament Saturday at Fargo South High School.
Coming off a year in which they sent four wrestlers to state, the Firebirds look to add some more state qualifiers.
“We’re working on getting crisper on our shots,” Firebirds head coach Todd Lambrecht said. “Last Friday wasn’t our best wrestling effort, very stagnant on our feet. So really working on that and just the overall mentality and what’s down the road because it’s an intense tournament. A lot is on the line, a chance to go to state.”
Returning state qualifiers are Colby Rance (138), Jace Estenson (152) and James Fisk. (126). Each of those wrestlers have moved up a weight class this season from last year.
While they have tournament experience, the rest of the Firebirds boast a youthful and inexperienced roster.
“Some of these guys are young enough and they’re going ‘how do I prepare for this?’” Lambrecht said. “You hope throughout the season that your guys get ready for that mentally.”
Lambrecht said he believes the 106, 132, 152 and 160 pound weight classes will be the most stacked and competitive where Devils Lake has their wrestlers at.
The top eight places advance to the state tournament, which is held Feb. 18-20 in Fargo.
“My expectations are for them to wrestle hard every match,” Lambrecht said. “Constantly move and setting up our shots. Being in control instead of letting someone else control them. That’s vital for us. If they go out and do that, they’ll have success.”
