On Friday, Aug. 21, the North Dakota State Patrol (NDSP) and Traill County Sheriff’s Office will conduct a sobriety checkpoint at a predetermined location in Traill County, according to a NDSP press release. Saturation patrols will be conducted following the checkpoint.
As of Aug. 8, 2026, NDSP reports that there have been 59 fatalities on North Dakota roadways this year. Eleven of the fatalities (18.6%) were related to crashes involving alcohol.
Sgt. Christopher Schaefer, NDSP Northeast Regional Sergeant stated, “We see firsthand how one decision to drive impaired can change lives forever. Make the responsible choice before the night begins and designate a sober driver to make sure everyone gets home safely.”
The North Dakota State Patrol stated that they are committed to the Vision Zero strategy which is built on the belief that no loss of life on our roads is acceptable. “Through education, enforcement, and responsible choices by every driver, we can work together toward the goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roadways,” the statement concluded.
Results from this planned enforcement will be posted to the NDSP website the week following the enforcement.
