The final Grand Entry of the 58 annual Fort Totten Days Wacipi was held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 26. Because of the heat in the high 90s that day, only the veterans, dignitaries and royalty participated in the final Grand Entry. They were led into the Andrew Shaw Arena by bearers of five Eagle Staffs from the various communities represented, including the Spirit Lake Nation.
Shown center, Lonna Street, Chairwoman of the Spirit Lake Nation, entered the arena leading honored young royalty.
The announcer’s box in the Andrew Shaw Arena has a photo of Shaw and details of his service during the Korean War, including the 37 months he lived in captivity. He survived the “Tiger Death March” among other terrible things for over three years.
