President John F. Kennedy
DALLAS (AP) – President John F. Kennedy, thirty-sixth president of the United States, was shot to death today by a hidden assassin armed with a high powered rifle.
Kennedy, 46, lived about 30 minutes after a sniper cut him down as his limousine left downtown Dallas. Newsmen said the shot that hit him was fired about 12:30 p.m. (CST). A hospital announcement said he died at approximately 1 p.m. of a bullet wound in the head.
Automatically, the mantle of the presidency fell to Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, a native Texan who had been riding two cars behind the chief executive.
There was no immediate word on when Johnson would take the oath of office.

Kennedy died at Parkland Hospital where his bullet-pierced body had been taken in a frantic but futile effort to save his life.

Kennedy was the first president to be assassinated since William McKinley was shot in 1901.
It was the first death of a president in office since Franklin D. Roosevelt died of a cerebral hemorrhage at Warm Springs, Ga., in April 1945

Malcolm X
New York (AP) – Police in New York and Chicago kept wary guard today against any effort to avenge the assassination of Malcolm X, fiery counselor of violence in the Negro civil rights movement.
The rebel Black Muslim, who broke from the parent group to form his own sect, was shot down by conspirators here Sunday as he stepped forward to address a meeting of his followers.
Police seized a young Negro man, wounded in the leg during the disorder caused by the slaying, and charged him with homicide.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP). – Nobel Laureat Martin Luther King Jr., father of non-violence in the American Civil Rights movement, was killed by an assassin’s bullet Thursday night.
King, 39, was hit in the neck by a bullet as he stood on the balcony of a motel here. He died less than an hour later in St. Joseph Hospital.

The 1964 Nobel Peace Prize winner … had come to lead protests on behalf of the city’s 1,300 striking garbage workers, most of them Negroes, when he was shot.
Two unidentified men were arrested several blocks from the motel.

Senator Robert F. Kennedy
North Dakota government and political leaders reacted with shock Wednesday to the shooting of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy in Los Angeles.

Gov. William L. Guy cut short a camping trip with his family to hurry to the Capitol in Bismarck. Guy said, “We are stunned and shocked.”
He also sent a telegram to Mrs. Robert Kennedy, saying: “This terrible tragedy has swept our nation into horror and bewilderment. We are praying for your husband. We send you and your children our deep sympathy

Former Beatle John Lennon
NEW YORK (AP) – John Lennon, the singer-songwriter who helped make the Beatles musical superstars and pop-culture legends in the 1960s, was killed in a late-night spray of gunfire outside his luxury apartment building.
He was the co-author with Paul McCartney of such famous songs as “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Yesterday” and “Let it Be.”
Minutes after the shots rang out, police took a suspect into custody. Early today, they charged Mark David Chapman, 25, of Hawaii, with murder. No motive was known immediately.
Yelling “I’m shot,” Lennon staggered and collapsed face down after the shooting at 10:50 p.m. Monday at the Dakota, a century-old building at the corner of 72nd Street and Central Park West. Police rushed the former Beatle to Roosevelt Hospital, a mile away, in a squad car.
