Spring 1991 could see business construction in Devils Lake that promises to significantly change the city’s retailing climate.
City officials expect new Kmart and Wal-Mart stores, both representing major national discount retail chains, to begin construction by then.
Kmart developers have submitted preliminary plans to the city for the construction of a new 86,000-square-foot retail outlet along the north side of U.S. Highway 2.
And land acquisition continues for the Wal-Mart development site along the southwestern side of U.S. Highway 2, according to Gary Martinson, city assessor.
Developers recently successfully completed a voluntary annexation process to put the Wal-Mart development site within the city’s corporate limits.
“It should be a good year for Devils Lake,” Martinson told City Commission members Monday night.
“We could have both Kmart and Wal-Mart under construction this spring,” he said.
Plans call for Kmart developers to build the new store on acquired North Dakota State Highway Department land, according to Martinson.
He said the new Kmart store is looking for a Nov. 1, 1991 opening.
