Leevers Supermarkets, a local grocery store chain that serves communities in Eastern North Dakota and Western Minnesota, began with the Devils Lake store in 1938 and continues to serve the community in 2026.

Mr. and Mrs. Norman J. Leevers were honored at a dinner in the Legion dining room Saturday evening by their employees for 25 years in business in Devils Lake.

Eighty-three guests were present, including employees of the Super Valu store, their wives and husbands, and the Ambassadors of the Chamber of Commerce and their wives.

Mr. Leevers opened the first store Jan. 14, 1938, as the IGA Store, in the Baird Block next to the O’Brien Hardware. In 1943 the store was moved south of Glickson’s in the Baird Block and in 1959 moved into the present location at the corner of Fifth Street and Fourth Avenue. Leevers also operates a Super Valu store at New Rockford.
