JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The North American Bison Discovery Center is proud to announce the inaugural recipients of the Legacy of the Herd Award, a new recognition honoring individuals whose leadership, service, generosity, and commitment have made a lasting impact on the organization. The award will be presented annually to individuals whose dedication and service have left a lasting mark on the Bison Center and its mission.
The 2026 Legacy of the Herd Award recipients are Don Williams of Jamestown, N.D., Rod Sather of Vivian, S.D., and Jud Seaman of Rapid City, S.D.
The Legacy of the Herd Award was established to recognize individuals whose leadership and contributions have helped shape, strengthen, and sustain the Bison Center over time. While their support has taken different forms, each recipient has played an important role in advancing the organization’s mission and in positioning it for future success.
Don Williams has served on the Bison Center’s Board of Directors since 2009 and has held several leadership roles, including President, Vice President, and Secretary. Beyond his board service, Williams has volunteered with the museum’s bison herd, assisted with facilities projects, supported fundraising efforts, contributed financially, and served as a dedicated advocate for the organization. A lifetime member, he also played an important role in developing and securing approval for the Bison Center’s master plan, helping establish a roadmap for the organization’s future.
Rod Sather, owner of Mosquito Park Enterprises and a board member of the National Buffalo Foundation, has been a steadfast supporter of the Bison Center since before the museum was established. A longtime advocate for the organization, Sather has provided consistent financial support, encouragement, and guidance throughout the museum’s history. His belief in the Bison Center’s mission has helped sustain and strengthen the organization through the years.
Jud Seaman served on the Bison Center’s Board of Directors from 2016 through 2025, including service as board president. A lifetime member and longtime supporter, Seaman has donated his professional auctioneer services, sponsored events, supported fundraising initiatives, and provided generous financial support to the organization. He also played a key leadership role in developing and securing approval for the Bison Center’s master plan.
“The Bison Center would not be where it is today without people like Don, Rod, and Jud,” said Ilana Xinos, Executive Director of the North American Bison Discovery Center. “Each of them has given generously of their time, talent, expertise, and resources over many years. They have helped us navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and continue moving our mission forward. This award recognizes not just what they have done, but the lasting impact they have had on our organization and the people we serve.”
The recipients were recognized on Wednesday, June 10, during the Great Bison Bash, the Bison Center’s annual fundraising event celebrating the people, partnerships, and community support that make its work possible.
