The Devils Lake Public School Board met at 5 p.m. on Monday, June 22 in the Sports Center. All members were present with the exception of Jason Hodous.
Following the Call to Order and Pledge of Allegiance they approved the agenda as written, no changes.
The first item of business was the discussion of Student Outcome Goals. Striving for continuous improvement the board with staff monitor goal progress carefully for all students. Today’s input was from Principals Kim Krogfoss at Minnie H and Crystal Eversvik at Sweetwater.
It was the consensus of the board members following much discussion, that they were pleased with the students’ progress even in instances where all their goals were not completely attained. The question kept coming up regarding the goals themselves, were they realistic?
Superintendent Ned Clooten and the board members were concerned that teachers would focus on the targets rather than the progress being made. “Spring over spring I am pleased with the progress,” Clooten stated. He emphasized the value of the J.O.M. paras working one on one with each student.
Lake Region Special Education director Rhandi Knutson also gave input from her perspective. Special needs students don’t take all the same tests, but have targets to meet, as well. She reported that in most cases they saw close to 100% especially in GPM 1.1.
Board chair, Cory Meyer read the statement on Community Speakers to Agenda Items policy.
The board voted unanimousky to approve the Consent Agenda.
There were no items for discussion and action on the agenda.
Clooten gave a brief update on CMS and how they intend to display the collection of class photos that had lined the halls of Central Middle School for decades, preserving the photos in a gallery much like churches use for confirmation class photos rather than bolted to the walls above the lockers as in past years.
The next regular meeting of the Devils Lake Public School Board will take place July 27 at 5 p.m.
Then the three school board members who were recently re-elected were each sworn in by Business Manager Melissa Haahr.
