A Message from Garcia: The 1873 Agreement: Part 3

The history and culture of the Spirit Lake Dakota

in

The 1873 Agreement, Part 2 was published on April 17, this is the remainder: The 1873 Agreement Part 3:

Continuing the list of names are as follows. Each name starts with an enrollment number, which I obtained from the Tribal Reality office at Fort Totten, North Dakota. Number 303 means Spirit Lake. If there is no number before the name, it means they probably died before allotment. Next the name is spelled correctly in bold black ink, with their birth and death date, if known. If there is no number preceding the name, it means I could not match the misspelled name to any records.

Coming Cloud and Grey Thunder Died before allotment. They are Tizaptanna, Sissituns (Archie Redfox’s grand uncles).

Iron Heart moved to Granite Falls, Minnesota and is buried in the Downcaster Cemetery.

His Spinning Feather is the great Grandfather of the Sherman Family. He was interviewed in 1911 by Robert Lowie, for his “Dances of the Eastern Dakota”, Museum of Natural History, New York.

Circling Iron is attached to the Ross Family.

Brown Owl has been photographed, Possibly grandfather to the Brown family.

Growlingis Chief Standing Buffalo’s First Soldier.

Black Panther has Black Tiger Bay in Devils Lake named for him.

Two Lighting Bolts (Tuwannumpa) Tunwan is a difficult word to translate as it is referring to the Thunders. He was the great Grandfather of George Ross.

Wasicun Nape Yuza. I have translated “Wasicun” as Spirit rather than the usual “Wasicu” as the original word is Wa – Sicun, something mysterious, a living spirit.
