The Ramsey County State’s Attorney’s Office has formally charged Denton Heisler with two felonies and several misdemeanors in connection with an incident on or about Nov. 21, 2025, during which Heisler allegedly struck a parked, unattended vehicle while driving his own motor vehicle.
According to the charging document, after allegedly striking the unattended vehicle, the defendant drove away, leaving behind pieces of his own vehicle and made no attempt to contact, leave his information or otherwise report the accident. He reported to law enforcement that he hit a deer with his vehicle and filed an insurance claim; the claim was supposedly cancelled when the defendant became aware that an investigation was underway. It was also alleged that the defendant smeared what was suspected to be fecal matter over the damaged area of his vehicle in a manner that concealed the damage from striking an unattended vehicle.
The unattended vehicle, which had been hit with enough force to drag it approximately 50 feet, was considered totaled at an estimated value of $1,500.
Drawn up on April 2 by Noah A. Korger with the State’s Attorney’s Office, the charging document include the following counts: fraudulent insurance act (a class C felony), tampering with physical evidence (a class C felony), duty upon striking an unattended vehicle (a class A misdemeanor), false information to law enforcement (a class A misdemeanor), and reckless driving (a class B misdemeanor).
Heisler is not in custody and will appear in court to answer the charges on April 27 at 9 a.m. As Heisler is a former North Dakota Highway Patrol Officer, sources indicate that the case will be referred to someone outside of Ramsey County for prosecution.
