DEVILS LAKE — Parks & Facilities Manager Brent Schmitz handed out sheets to the Devils Lake Park Board, detailing the specific tasks maintenance has been completing on a daily basis.
His updates highlighted a flurry of progress and discussion from Tuesday’s monthly meeting.
At Burdick Arena, Schmitz said, shaft seals are going to be replaced soon.
There’s been a snafu with the showers, however. After recently getting repaired, they froze up during the cold weather, causing pipes to break. Schmitz is planning to get maintenance on that.
There’s less going on at Bill Jerome Arena. Some toilets in the locker rooms had to be replaced recently, but it’s otherwise going well since the last freeze-up.
Schmitz has been overseeing regular snow removal and ice maintenance at both arenas.
The board made motions to approve adding a floor scrubber and computer and printer at the shop, along with one to approve Matthew Beck’s effective date for promotion and pay raise (which had been discussed at a previous meeting).
All has continued to go smoothly with recreation and the golf course. Golf Course Grounds Superintendent Andy Hokanson noted that the cross country trails have been groomed and are ready for use.
Superintendent Dennis Nybo mentioned that he needs approval for two grants, and the board carried a motion to allow him to apply. They also authorized the purchase of a mower for maintenance.
Nybo, who will be retiring soon, brought up the impending superintendent opening. He said that he sent out an email with times and dates of initial interviews. The board is hoping to hold a special meeting about it in the first or second week of March, once they get the finalists.
At the beginning of the meeting, Tony Prozinski from Bravera Bank Insurance paid a visit. He turned it over to his colleague, Scott, who offered to help the board members with their insurance while explaining what would be offered in their policies.
After Scott finished his pitch and answered questions, the board agreed that they’d be interested in exploring some of the changes presented. A motion to change the board’s agent of record for insurance to Bravera was carried.
The board’s next regular meeting will be held March 26.
