NORTH DAKOTA – President Trump’s State of the Union Address on the evening of Tuesday, Feb. 24 sparked contrasting reactions from state politicians.
Gov. Kelly Armstrong issued the following statement afterwards, “From border security and tax relief to cutting costs for consumers and energizing the economy, President Trump made a strong case that his America First agenda is delivering for North Dakota and the country as a whole. We feed and fuel the world better than anyone, and the President’s continued focus on unleashing U.S. energy and slashing unnecessary regulations and red tape have the potential to lead our state and nation into a new era of prosperity.”
Hours before Trump’s address, U.S. House Rep. Julie Fedorchak (R-N.D.) said, “Under the last administration’s policies, America projected weakness abroad and allowed our adversaries to take advantage. Today, President Trump’s peace through strength agenda is ending conflict around the world, compelling our allies to help, and reestablishing American leadership.”
North Dakota Democratic-NPL Communications Director Laura Dronen was less optimistic, responding with a statement two days later on Thursday, Feb. 26. “This administration has left a trail of broken promises to the American people,” she said. “We heard no plan to repay Americans the $170 billion in tariffs that Trump illegally collected. We heard no plan to address the self-inflicted healthcare crisis. We heard no plan to bring justice for the Epstein survivors. Senator Hoeven was too busy going through photos on his phone to hear anything. There’s a better way forward. Across our state and across our country, people are stepping up to run for office to counter the wake of destruction this administration has left. For the next 250 days we’ll do everything we can to elect folks up and down the ballot who will stand with and fight for hardworking North Dakotans.”
