Earlier this week, the North Dakota Association of Secondary School Principals (NDASSP), in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), announced that Jason Schwabe, principal of Thompson High/Middle School, has been named the 2026 NDASSP Secondary Principal of the Year. The award recognizes Schwabe’s sustained leadership, commitment to student-centered practices, and dedication to building a positive and supportive school culture where all students can thrive.

According to the press release, Schwabe is currently in his 22nd year as a high school principal, including 18 years serving the Thompson Public School community. He previously spent nine years in Langdon, including four as principal, and began his career in education as a teacher in the Munich–Starkweather School District.

“Throughout his career, Schwabe has taken thoughtful and intentional steps to strengthen the culture of his school, with a focus on both academic achievement and the emotional well-being of students and staff,” the statement read. “Under his leadership, Thompson Public School has implemented systems ensuring that every student has a trusted adult connection within the building, reinforcing a sense of belonging and support.”

“Principal Schwabe exemplifies what it means to lead with authenticity and purpose,” the statement added. “His leadership has created a school environment where relationships matter, students feel valued, and educators are empowered to do their very best work.”

Schwabe has also worked closely with district leadership to expand support services for staff, including confidential counseling and professional guidance, recognizing that strong schools are built by supported educators. He has led efforts to expand Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), strengthen collaboration among teachers, and increase course offerings to meet the diverse needs and interests of students.

Known for leading by example and communicating with clarity, Schwabe has fostered a culture where students feel respected, listened to, and prepared for success in school, career, and life. Families, colleagues, and community members consistently commend his partnership-driven approach and unwavering commitment to what is best for kids.

As North Dakota’s Secondary Principal of the Year, Schwabe will be invited to the National Education Leadership Awards (NELA), a national celebration bringing together the country’s most influential school leaders. Honorees share innovative ideas, build lasting relationships, and amplify their impact within their schools and communities. The event culminates in the announcement of the national Middle Level and High School Principals of the Year.
