DEVILS LAKE, N.D. – A man who was in custody at the Lake Region Correctional Center, part of the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center, was found dead on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

According to a press release from the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office, a 67-year-old male died from injuries sustained from an apparent suicide by hanging. Correctional staff were notified by another inmate who found the individual hanging in the shower area of the jail cell. Despite extensive lifesaving measures that were taken, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The name will be released upon notification of family members.

“This is a deeply tragic situation,” said Lake Region Law Enforcement Center Director Starr Klemestrud. “Our thoughts are with the individual’s family. The death remains under investigation in accordance with policy, and we are reviewing all procedures related to inmate welfare. We cannot comment further at this time.”

The incident is currently being investigated by the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation along with the North Dakota Department of Corrections. Based on preliminary investigations, no foul play is currently suspected.
