North Dakotans Kicked Off America’s 250th Anniversary Nov. 2

BISMARCK, N.D. (Nov. 2, 2025) — The ND250 Commission invited all North Dakotans to participate in the state’s official commemoration and celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The ND250 Kickoff Celebration was held Sunday, Nov. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. CT at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck.

The free public event was held Nov. 2 to coincide with North Dakota Statehood Day, marking the anniversary of the state’s admission to the Union in 1889. It also launched North Dakota’s efforts to honor its role in America’s history through storytelling, culture, community, and service.

“This is a celebration for every North Dakotan,” said Bill Peterson, State Historical Society of North Dakota director and ND250 Commission chair. “From the music and performances to the educational activities, the ND250 Kickoff is the start of a movement to reflect on where we’ve come from and how we’ll shape our future.”

The day’s activities allowed guests to enjoy music, education, and history throughout the museum and in the auditorium.

Event Highlights

Guests enjoyed a lively afternoon of music, performances, children’s activities, and community exhibits throughout the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum. Refreshments, including cupcakes, cookies, coffee, and juice, were available throughout the event. Continuous showings of ‘Our Heritage’ videos played in the Great Plains Theater, and an American Revolution documentary was shown hourly in Lecture Room B. Highlights included performances by the St. Mary’s Central High School Wind Orchestra of Bismarck and State Troubadour Chuck Suchy, along with special appearances by Theodore Roosevelt reenactor John Dobmeier and former Gov. Jack Dalrymple, author of Oliver Dalrymple and His Bonanza Farm.

The museum also featured interactive booths and exhibits hosted by community organizations, state organizations, and military representatives, as well as children’s activities including face painting, patriotic crafts, and visits from the Bismarck Larks mascots.

The ND250 Kickoff Celebration was designed for all ages — a day to learn, connect and celebrate together as North Dakota launches its journey toward America’s 250th anniversary.
