Herbert “Gene” Eugene McDonald, 84, died Monday, June 15, 2015 in Spokane, WA at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Herbert “Gene” Eugene McDonald, 84, died Monday, June 15, 2015 in Spokane, WA at Sacred Heart Hospital.


He was born on February 8, 1931 in Maza, ND to William McDonald and DeEtta Bennett. He attended Devils Lake High School and later joined the Air Force where he served in Germany. While attending Eastern Washington University he married Gemma Kirchner on June 4, 1955. The following year he took over his father’s small farm in Douglas County and was actively involved with the farm until his death.


Gene was an active community member involved with the local grange, the VFW Post 6006, 43 years of service on Port District #4, served as a board member for “Our House” Cancer Care of North Central Washington.


He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ellen Schultz and Wilma Hobson both of North Dakota; wife, Gemma Kirchner; stepson, Patrick O’Connor and step-daughter, Michaele Ann McKinley.


Survivors include son, Howard McDonald of Coulee City; stepson, Dan O’Connor of Coulee City; stepdaughter, Christine Norley of Quincy; sister, Mari Ann Peterson and husband, Pete of Carrington, ND; sister, Clarice Payne and husband, Lew of Boise, ID; six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and one great, great, grandchild.


Funeral services were held June 20 at the Coulee City Assembly of God Church.


Waterville Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
