Bjarne Haakon Berg, 93,of West Fargo ND, died on Saturday, June 6, at Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo.

Bjarne Haakon Berg, 93,of West Fargo ND, died on Saturday, June 6, at Sheyenne Crossings in West Fargo.

   He was born in Sullivan Township, Ramsey County, North Dakota on September 15, 1921, to Christ and Marie (Svidalsnes) Berg.  He graduated from Starkweather High School in 1939, and attended the Wahpeton School of Science and Dakota Business School.  He served with the 8th Air Force during World War II, stationed at British Alconbury Air Base near Watton and Norwich for two and a half years. He worked as an avionics mechanic on the B17 and B24 aircraft.  After the war ended, he was honorably discharged, and returned to work on the farm near Starkweather, and took it over in 1947.

Bjarne married Hazel Sager on February 12, 1955, and they recently celebrated their 60th anniversary.  They raised their children on the farm near Starkweather, and were active members of Trinity-Bergen Lutheran Church.  He served on the Starkweather school board and was active in many farming organizations.  He was very talented at anything mechanical, and did most of the repairs on his farm machinery.  He took his family on trips to the Montreal Worlds Fair in 1967, to Norway in 1971, and many summer camping trips to lakes in Canada.

Bjarne retired from farming in 1982, and they moved to Fargo, ND in 1984 where they were members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  They became very active at Bonanzaville where he worked many years on repairing vintage tractors and became well known for his ability to fix the magnetos used to power the older equipment.  He was a life member of the Sons of Norway, and the Elks.  He was also active in the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag, and in the F-M Two-Cylinder Club. He and Hazel made many trips around the world, especially Norway, bought a motorhome to travel, and joined the Sheyenne Valley Good Sam RV Club. They drove their motorhome to Alaska several times to visit their daughter.

Bjarne is survived by his wife, Hazel, West Fargo; children, Nancy (Matt) Wojnowski, Chugiak, AK, Jim (Elizabeth) Berg, Starkweather, Robert (Mary Beth) Berg, Starkweather and Eden Prairie, MN, Susan (Ron) Torlucci, Hackettstown, NJ; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Norma Vanderpan, Brookings, SD, Lois (David) Anderson, Mayville, ND, and Ann (Ed) Ellenson, Henning, MN; brother-in-law, Clayton Engelstad, Mentor, MN; sisters-in-law, Bette Berg, Starkweather and Hazel Berg, Walnut Creek, CA and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Monrad Berg, Haldor Berg and Clarence “Chris” Berg; sister, Carole Engelstad, and brother-in-law, Les Vanderpan.

In lieu of flowers and memorials, the family requests donations be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley, or your favorite charity.

Visitation for Bjarne will be  Sunday, June 14 4 to 6 p.m. with a 6 p.m. public prayer pervice and time of sharing at the West Funeral Home in West Fargo. Funeral services  will be held Monday, June 15 at 10 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fargo.Bjarne will be laid to rest Monday, June 15 at  5 p.m. at Starkweather Cemetery, Starkweather followed by a time of sharing and fellowship at the Trinity Bergan Lutheran Church in Starkweather.
