By Harry Lipsiea Journal Reporter While it’s early in the season, it was clear by looking at the standings that Tuesday evening’s conference match-up was huge for the Devils Lake boys basketball team. Taking on a competitive Valley City squad in a two-point EDC contest, the game is one that had major implications on the standing. It wasn’t easy. There wasn’t a winner after 36 minutes or the first overtime, but Devils Lake found a way to win Tuesday at home against a solid Hi-Liner team. The Firebirds walked away with an 83-80 win in double overtime outscoring Valley City 19-16 in the extra sessions. The Hi-Liners forced the first overtime when Hunter Burchill nailed a three to tie the game at 74 when regulation came to an end. It was Devils Lake’s turn in the first overtime to come up with a dramatic play. Zach Dahlen drove through the lane and made a layup to force a second overtime. The Firebirds controlled a majority of the second overtime taking a six-point lead behind buckets by Dahlen and Hunter Fee. The Hi-Liners battled back to get as close as three, but the Firebirds wrapped up the 83-80 victory. It was a true team win as balance was key. Dahlen led the Firebirds with 28 points. Frank Knowski had 14 points while Hunter Fee had 11. Josh Frelich and Joe Charboneau had nine points each. Ben Shepherd added seven points. Nik Desai rounded out the scoring with five points. Devils Lake improves to 4-6 in the EDC.
