Former Devils Lake teacher and football coach to be recognized.

Devils Lake Football (1-5, 0-4 EDC) celebrates Joe Roller Night this Friday night as the Firebirds host Dickinson (3-3, 1-3 WDA) at 7 p.m.

Roller coached the Firebirds from 1978-89, a period in which he was named North Dakota high school football Coach of the Year twice (1986, 1989). In 1989, his final year with Devils Lake, he led the Firebirds to a runner-up finish in the Class-A state playoffs.

Roller was inducted to the North Dakota State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987 and received an award of merit from the University of North Dakota for his contributions to North Dakota high school football.
On March 15, 1988 the Devils Lake Public School Board named the football complex hosting the home games of Devils Lake football teams, Roller Field, in honor of Joe Roller, and this Friday Firebird fans will honor him once again for his years of service to the community.

Roller’s family will be in attendance and will be named honorary captains for the coin toss: his wife, Jodi, his children, Matthew and Becky, and his six grandchildren, Sam, Max, Addison, Toby, Sophia and Brody. The Roller family will also be recognized at halftime.

Tailgating for the game this Friday will begin at 5 p.m. at the bus barn, sponsored by JS Ag Consulting. In addition to the barbeque, chips and pickles will also be served.
