After four and a half months the NFL season is down to four teams playing for a spot in the biggest spectacle in sports.  I can remember many years when the conference championship games were better than the Super Bowl itself, this year’s games have the potential to achieve that.

The NFC championship game is first up on Sunday with the 49ers and Falcons meeting in Atlanta.  The 49ers looked very impressive last Saturday in defeating the Packers while the Falcons hung on for dear life against the Seahawks after building up a big lead in the first half.  The Falcons defense is kind of spotty in my opinion but their offense is potent although the Seahawks did an excellent job of containing it in the second half.  The 49ers are a very talented young team with an outstanding coach and are looking to erase last year’s disappointment when they almost made the Super Bowl.  I think this year they will make the Super Bowl and the Falcons season will come to an end.  I expect a close game but I think the Falcons who I have said all year are the luckiest team in the NFL will finally see their luck run out on Sunday.

The AFC championship game has the potential of being a high scoring affair between two teams with a lot of firepower.  The Patriots have been in these situations many times before and can come at you from a multitude of directions while the Ravens are a team who look to be on a mission.  The Ravens have been up and down this year and have struggled for consistency at times but seem to have found it in the playoffs and have played two outstanding games so far.  Both teams are very well coached and I see no reason why this couldn’t be one of the best games of the year.  If the Ravens and 49ers can both come up with victories on Sunday then the Harbaugh brothers would coach against one another in the Super Bowl which would mark the first time that two brothers have coached against one another in theNFL title game.

The Missouri Tigers men’s basketball team played reasonably well in a victory over Georgia on Wednesday night with the team shooting much better although not up to the level they were earlier in the year.  They next play Florida on Saturday in a very tough SEC road game where they will need to get back to playing the way they were a couple of weeks ago if they want to beat the Gators on their home floor.

The Truman State men’s and women’s basketball teams split their double header in Topeka against Washburn on Wednesday night but this time the results were reversed from what they have been of late.  The women struggled against a very good Washburn team and came up on the short end of the score.  Washburn has one of the better women’s teams in this region and Truman proved they could hang with them and I truly believe that had this game been in Pershing the result would have been reversed.  The men’s team looked very impressive in beating a very good Washburn team in a game that saw the Truman men put together a very solid game on both ends of the floor.  Both Truman teams will be at home on Saturday for games against Central Missouri State in what will be Central MO’s last trip to Pershing before Truman leaves the MIAA at the end of this season.

The Kirksville High School basketball teams get back into action after having this week off with games against Booneville on Friday.  The girls have a home game while the boys travel to Booneville.  The boys have put several nice games together recently while the girls are clearly one of the best teams in the state of Missouri in my opinion.

The KHS wrestlers are in another tough tournament on Saturday as they travel to the Platte County tournament which is always one of the better tournaments in the state.  With districts only being a couple of weeks away these tough weekend tournaments should put the KHS wrestlers in an excellent position to win many of the weight divisions as they will be familiar with most if not all of the others in the district.

We’ll be back on Monday with another blog reviewing this weekend’s sports action and looking ahead to what next week will offer.  Please continue to support all the blogs on this site and thanks as always for supporting this one.

Have a terrific weekend!
