Just when you thought this winter couldn’t get any better along comes a new reason to be thankful for the nice weather and better road conditions than the region has seen for quite some time.
Sullys Hill National Game Preserve kicks off 2012 with a slate of monthly events that will provide fun and entertainment for the whole family. Sullys Hill will host a free series of events at the Visitor Center on the second Saturday of each month called “Videos at the Visitor Center.” The series will kick off on Saturday, Jan. 14 with the new documentary, Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time, at 1:00 p.m.
This feature-length autobiography documents the life of famed conservationist, Aldo Leopold, and his concept of the “land ethic” that has helped shape the attitudes of many towards the land. Participants are invited to join a short discussion following the movie. Free popcorn, lemonade and coffee will be provided by the Friends of Sullys Hill to enhance the viewing experience.
Refuge Manager Tom Ibsen said, “Aldo Leopold has inspired many hunters, conservationists, and lovers of the outdoors for more than 60 years and his essays about our relationship to the land are still powerful and educating us today. We are pleased to kick off this video series with this inspirational tribute to this amazing individual.”
An Afternoon of Fun
The Visitor Center will be open from noon to 4:00 p.m. for each “Videos at the Visitor Center” date with crafts and other activities for children. Ibsen says, “Come out with the whole family and make an afternoon of it!” There will be no entrance fee to Sullys Hill for the entire Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend from January 14-16.
Also, coming soon, the Friends of Sullys Hill will be sponsoring the annual Winter Festival at Sullys Hill on Saturday, February 11. Save the date and read the Journal as it gets closer to the festival for more details and information.
