Yesterday ROTC students from Devils Lake High School visited Prairie View Elementary School to teach their younger counterparts the proper way to fold the American flag.
The ceremony was held as part of the school's Veteran's Day Assembly.
Lynn Goodwill, Prairie View Principal, took the floor first to speak with the students.
“You know tomorrow is a day we are off school for a very, very special reason,” she said. “It's Veteran's Day, a time to thank the military people for all they've done for our country.”
Goodwill discussed the “Wall of Honor,” a wall in the gymnasium dedicated to service members known to the children, and the respect that it commands.
Next Major Carl Bailey and his cadets demonstrated the proper way to fold a flag and explained the colors of the flag as well as what the stars and stripes symbolize. He also told them the triangular shape of the folded flag resembles the hats worn by servicemen in the Revolutionary War.
Then several of the fourth grade students were called forward to try their hand at folding the flag.
The entire presentation took only 20 minutes, but Cadet Kody Mock hopes it was information they will remember for a long time.
“They can grow up respecting our country and the flag,” he said.
Other cadets taking part in the ceremony were Eric Henry, Randi Hannestad, Jordan Holtz, Kaycee Rubbelke, Sabrina Warner and Brooke Ystaas.
