In the face of a rather hectic daily schedule, senior Amanda McMullen at Devils Lake High School still manages to find time for others.
She serves as editor for the school newspaper, competes in volleyball and hockey and maintains a lofty status in the classroom.
And part of her duties as editor of the paper puts her into involvement in a very timely and satisfying project this time of the year.
It's a project that involves securing caps and mittens for kids in the school system that might need them.
“We ask students in publications and other students to donate the caps and mittens,” Amanda says.
“We seem to round up quite a few of them for each school and the kids all enjoy it. It's really quite a rewarding and satisfying thing to be involved in.”
The community project is part of the Northern Interscholastic Press Association and is conducted annually at the school.
The kids are also involved in the Kindness Retreat Center at the Memorial Center.
Amanda is also involved in Student Council, plays volleyball and hockey, and is a member of the National Honor Society.
She carries a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom, which has also earned her a spot in the National Honor Society.
“School comes fairly easily for me, but that doesn't mean I don't have to work at it,” adds Amanda.
With that gaudy GPA, Amanda says she's weighing her collegiate options of attending either UND in Grand Forks or NDSU in Fargo.
She says she's still unsure of a career choice, but may be leaning toward architecture.
“My mom and dad support everything I do, but they don't push,” Amanda smiles.
