“Our Guard must have all the tools they need for flood fight,” Sen. Kent Conrad said.
With rivers across the state expected to start flooding within weeks, Conrad met with leaders from the North Dakota National Guard to discuss preparation plans.
“We need to be vigilant and well prepared in the weeks ahead. I want to make sure the Guard has everything it needs to safeguard North Dakota’s communities,” Senator Conrad said. “The potential is there for severe flooding. We will continue to keep a watchful eye on the weather and spring thaw.”
Senator Conrad met with the North Dakota National Guard’s Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Dave Sprynczynatyk, to assess flood preparation efforts across the state. Gen. Sprynczynatyk told the Senator that 2,600 soldiers and airmen will be available for this year’s flood fight and additional sandbags, barriers and other flood-fighting tools are being ordered and stockpiled.
Gen. Sprynczynatyk told the Senator that the Guard is coordinating with emergency agencies across the state and is prepared for the looming flood. Joining Senator Conrad and Gen. Sprynczynatyk in today’s meeting were Deputy Adjutant General Pat Martin, Air National Guard Commander Al Palmer, and the Director of Facilities, Colonel Steve Tabor.
“I have complete confidence in Gen. Sprynczynatyk and the men and women in his command. They’ve been through this before. They have the experience and expertise to hold back the floodwaters,” Senator Conrad said. “Thanks to their dedication and hard work, I am confident we will be ready for anything that comes our way.”
Last week the National Weather Service released its forecast and predicted major flooding in North Dakota, with a 90 percent chance for major flooding in Fargo.
Earlier this week, Senator Conrad met with leaders from the Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to discuss flood preparation efforts for North Dakota.
