Lake Region State College’s Brittany Wirth (34) attempts to block a shot from Williston State’s Christine Miller during a game earlier this year between the two schools at the Devils Lake Sports Center. Miller and the Tetons rallied in the second half to claim the Region 13 championship with a 66-62 win over the Lady Royals in Williston. LRSC ends its season at 19-9.

WILLISTON, N.D. — Duane Schwab’s game plan heading into Lake Region State College’s Region 13 championship game likely centered around keeping Williston State’s Meagan Anderson in check.
The Lady Royals did just that, but four of Anderson’s teammates stepped up at the right time to help Williston State to a 66-62 win over LRSC.
The win capped a furious second-half comeback by the Tetons and advanced WSC to the district tournament, which will be played at Williston March 9.
Lake Region’s season came to a close. The Lady Royals finished at 19-9 on the season.
Wednesday’s championship game was a tale of two halves.
Williston State trailed 40-24 at halftime and LRSC matched that 16-point advantage when sophomore Mandi Bindas hit a pair of free throws to put the Lady Royals in front 44-28 with just over 17 minutes left in the game.
That was when the Tetons began to chip away at the double-digit deficit.
Christine Miller’s field goal with 17:20 to go started things rolling for WSC.
A 3-pointer by Jamie Njos and a traditional 3-point play  from Abby Nasset pulled Williston State to within 44-36 with 16 minutes to go in the contest.
It was the first time since midway through the first half that Williston had been within 10 points when Brittany Wirth’s short jump shot gave LRSC a 27-17 advantage.
But, it was a pair of 3-pointers by Shari Hewson on successive trips down the floor that proved to be the decisive run by the Tetons.
Hewson’s first trey tied the game at 58-58 with 4:15 to go and her second gave WSC its first lead since scoring the first five points of the game.
A field goal by Alicia Greening and a pair of free throws by Vittoria Poole were the only points LRSC would score over the final 3:25 as the Tetons took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 1:30 left in the game.
Anderson had entered the game leading the Tetons in scoring with more than 15 points per game. She was held scoreless in the first half and finished with just five points on the night.
With Anderson being shut down, Nasset stepped up and paced Williston State with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Both were game-highs.
Miller added 15 points, while Njos and Hewson finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Tetons, who will play the Illinois representative in the district tournament next week. The winner of that game will advance to the NJCAA national tournament in Salina, Kansas.
Bindas and Wirth both finished with 11 points in what would be the final game for both at LRSC. Katie Ralston added 10 points for the Lady Royals.
Bindas also topped the team with nine rebounds.
WSC outscored the Lady Royals 42-22 in the second half on its way to the championship win. The Tetons were good on 25 of 58 field goal attempts in the game and finished with 43 percent shooting.
LRSC shot 39 percent (27-70) for the game.
