FARGO, N.D. — Top-ranked Fargo South showed why the Bruins are the No. 1 team in North Dakota as three players scored in double figures in the first half on the way to a convincing 85-47 win over Devils Lake on Tuesday.
Meghan Roehrich scored 15 points in the first half for the Bruins, who also got 11 points each from Siri Burck and Alley Fischer in the opening 18 minutes as Fargo South built a comfortable 49-19 advantage over the Firebirds, who had little trouble in their season opener last week against Thief River Falls.
The Firebirds are 0-1 in the Eastern Dakota Conference and 1-1 on the year.
Roehrich finished with a game-high 27 points, while Fischer and Burck ended with 19 and 15 points, respectively, for the Bruins, who improved to 4-0 on the year with the win. Jasmine Moffett came off the bench to add 13 points for Fargo South.
Devils Lake’s Steph Mertens scored nine points in the opening half for the Firebirds, but was held to just five points in the second half. She finished with a team-high 14 points on the night. Hannah Elshaug scored all of her 12 points in the second half for the Firebirds before fouling out.
They were the only two Firebirds to reach double figures.
Jacklyn Knowski finished with eight points for Devils Lake, which was out-rebounded 42-35 in the game. Elshaug finished with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Bruins forced the Firebirds into 31 turnovers, and held Devils Lake to just 36 percent shooting (20-56) from the floor. Fargo South, which commited 16 turnovers, connected on 31 of 65 field goals for 48 percent shooting in the game.
Devils Lake returns home to face West Fargo on Saturday at the Devils Lake Sports Center. It will be part of a doubleheader as the DLHS boys will also take on the Packers that day.
