Devils Lake used a four run fourth inning that broke open a tie game and turned into a Firebirds 9-4 victory over the Bismarck Nationals Friday morning in the opening game of the Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament at Ruger Park.
The Firebirds moved on to the winners bracket to face the winner of Thompson/Mandan at 2:45 Friday afternoon. Thompson and Mandan opening pitch was scheduled at 10:30 a.m.
"We started off real well but struggled throwing some strikes," said Dustin Brodina, Devils Lake coach. "But we hit the ball really well, we made plays and we didn't have any errors so if we do that throughout the tournament we'll be successful."
Trason Beck, who was named the game's MVP, and Zach Boren both got two hits for Devils Lake. Fausten Olson's inside the park home run in the bottom of the second that scored Brendan Connor gave the Firebirds a 3-1 lead.
After Bismarck tied the game at 3-all in the top of the third, the Firebirds responded with four runs in their half of the inning that gave them a 7-3 cushion.
Devils Lake added two in the fifth for insurance.
"We just had some timely hits and base running were huge, they were the biggest thing," Brodina said.
