The Devils Lake Firebirds had their first major meet of the 2018 season last Friday in Fargo, the North Dakota EDC Indoor Championship. The track and field meet was held at the Shelly Ellig Indoor Track and Field Facility at NDSU. Eleven schools competed.

“Overall, I was impressed with how our athletes performed,” said John McLaurin, head coach of the Firebirds.   “For many of our kids this was their first meet with automatic timing.    I thought the first timers did great.    They will only get better.    We also had 17 kids with personal best!”

On the boys side, Leif Nelson, a junior, place second in the high jump, clearing six feet even.  Leif Nelson also tied for 11th in the boys triple jump.  Ian Tjelta, a senior, finished just out of the points in with ninth in the boys 60 meter hurdles.  Kyle Gratton, a junior, placed 11th in the shot put.  The Devils Lake Firebird boys picked up nine total team points in 15 events for a tenth place finish ahead of the Valley City Hi-Liners.  Fargo South ran away with the EDC championship scoring 117 team points.

The Devils Lake girls brought home a tenth place finish.  The 4x800 meter relay team took fifth.  They are Jess Mertens (sophomore), Kiya McLaurin (eight grade), Ramsey Brown (ninth grade), and Hallie Fritel (seventh).  McLaurin picked up points for the Firebirds in the 800 meter run finishing seventh.  Mertens and Brown finished just out of the point in the girls high jump, 12th and 17th, respectively.  Brown also finished 15th in the long jump.
