Vivian Lorraine Nelson was born December 24, 1922 to Hartley and Mabel Nelson at Riverdale Farm near Maddock, ND. She was the oldest of seven children. She weighed just two and a half pounds at birth and was fed with an eye dropper. Her first crib was a flannel-lined shoebox placed on the cook stove door. Her aunts took turns helping to care for her. She grew up in Oberon and graduated from Oberon High School in 1941. She attended Dakota Business College and worked in Fargo following graduation. She also taught at Josephine Country School. On June 30, 1946 she married Gilmen Hegland, the love of her life, at Oberon. They were married 61 years and from this union they had seven children. They farmed on the homestead farm near Oberon until 1983, when they retired and moved to Sheyenne, ND.
Mom could always be counted on to send a card, a picture, or a kind word. Her family was the center of her world. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was an avid gardener and photographer. She always felt gardening was her “therapy.” Her beautiful yard and flowers were a gift she shared with many. She lived her life by Christian principles. She left a legacy of faith, family and kindness.
She was a member of the Antelope Valley Lutheran and First Lutheran Churches. She was a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, and a member of Antelope Valley Ladies Aid.
She will be missed by her loving family: children, Holly (Rod) Zieman of Carrington, DeVona (Ed) Gasper of Circle, MT, Jarvis (Patty) Hegland of Oberon, Lola (Paul) Heer of Jamestown, ND, Kevin (Joan) Hegland of Billings, MT, and Greg (Cindy) Hegland of Sheyenne; 24 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; four siblings: Wanda Paulson of Carrington, Dallas (Verner) Erickson of New Rockford, Mayo Nelson of Aloha, OR, James (Anne) Nelson of Oberon; many nieces and nephews, and her special friend, Elsie Reutter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Renne, and brothers Wayne and Glen Nelson.
Mom, we miss you and love you. You will remain in our hearts until we meet again.
