James “Jim” R. Eback, 60, of Devils Lake, ND, died on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Mercy Hospital, Devils Lake
Visitation for Jim will be held at the Gilbertson Funeral Home, Devils Lake on Monday, March 8 from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a Rosary and scripture service at 7 p.m.Visitation on Tuesday will be at the church one hour prior to the funeral Mass.
Mass of Christian Burial for Jim will be on Tuesday, March 9 at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Devils Lake. Fr. Dale Kinzler will celebrate the Mass.  Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars and the North Dakota Military Funeral Honors Team.
Serving as casket bearers for Jim will be Leo Eback, Dave Eback, Richard DeArton, Grant Obenchain, Terry DeArton, Raymond DeArton and Terry Eback. Honorary bearers will be Fred Eback, Jeff Eback and all of Jim’s dear grandchildren.
James Richard Eback, loving son of Leo and Marie (Bingham) Eback Sr. and one of nine children, was born on November 27, 1949, in Devils Lake, ND. He attended school in Devils Lake and at age 19 he was united in marriage to Janice (DeArton) on February 15, 1969, at Cando, ND. He entered the United States Army at Fargo, ND on July 14, 1969, and served as a medic during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on February 11, 1971, with the rank of Specialist 4 and returned to North Dakota.
James and Janice settled in Devils Lake where they lived, worked and raised their family. Jim loved to cook and spent most of his life cooking for others. He enjoyed playing cards and being with his family of whom he was so very proud of.
James is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janice; daughter, Tammy Eback of Fargo, ND and two sons, Bradly Eback and his wife, Deb of Devils Lake and Bruce Eback, also of Fargo; five grandchildren, Corey, Karena, Marissa, Emily and Landen; his mother, Marie Eback of Warroad, MN; mother-in-law, Hilda DeArton of Cando, ND; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Angie (John) Durbin of Bismarck, ND, Fred (Mary) Eback of Devils Lake, Dorothy Ward of Fargo, Dave Eback also of Warroad, Jeff (Kathy) Eback of Andover, MN, Dianne (Jim) Classen of Warroad, Leo (Kelli) Eback of Virginia, MN; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Raymond (Dee) DeArton of Cando, Terry (Carol) DeArton of California and Richard (Elaine) DeArton of Devils Lake; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and their families also survive.
James was preceded in death by his father, Leo Eback Sr.; brother, Robert Eback Sr.; grandparents, George and Frances Eback and Fred and Josephine Bingham; father-in-law, John DeArton and nephews, Steven Durbin and Ryan Eback.
