The optimistic smile that normally stretches across the face of David Zimmerman has been waning with each passing game.
The familiar smile turned to a scowl on Tuesday after watching his Devils Lake boys hockey team drop an 8-0 decision to Fargo South-Shanley in Eastern Dakota Conference boys hockey action.
“They outhustled us,” a despondent Zimmerman said following Tuesday’s loss.
That was evident from the start as much of the first period was played in the Bruins’ offensive zone while keeping the pressure on Devils Lake goaltender Holden Kurtz.
Payton Drengson’s goal that squeaked past Kurtz just over two minutes into the game proved to be game-winner for the Bruins who added a goal by Jake Hintz with 17.5 seconds left in the period to take a 2-0 advantage at the first break.
But, the first period also saw Devils Lake have its best chances to get on the scoreboard.
Tyler Elshaug had a golden opportunity for the Firebirds midway through the period. He gained control of the puck and put a nifty move on a defender to go in one-on-one against Bruin netminder Jake Saltentine. But Elshaug was unable to get off a quality shot as FS-S maintained its 1-0 lead.
Jordan Longie also had his chance to put the Firebirds back in contention. But, his one-timer was off the mark and Salentine managed to control the puck.
“We had trouble finishing off plays ... that’s been the trouble all year,” Zimmerman said.
The Bruins added goals from Hintz and Jon Baune in the second period to virtually seal the win for Fargo South-Shanley.
The game got chippy in the third period, as evident by the seven penalties handed out. The Bruins were whistled for three of those and the Firebirds were hit with four penalties plus a game disqualifcation to Jake Anderson when he removed his gloves and helmet and tried to rough it up with Salentine with just over one minute to go in the game.
“We let (FS-S) get in our heads,” Zimmerman explained following the loss. “We need to learn to keep our cool ... and our poise.”
The loss drops Devils Lake to 0-12-0 in the Eastern Dakota Conference and 3-15-0 on the season. The Bruins, meanwhile, improved their record to 6-6-0 in conference play and 8-9-0 on the year.
Devils Lake returns to action on Friday when the Firebirds entertain Grand Forks Central at Burdick Arena before traveling to Jamestown, a team they defeated earlier this season, the following night.
