Sometimes its the little things that prove to be the difference.
Shelby Krueger proved that in a big way on Monday as she helped spark Lake Region State College to a 67-50 win over Dakota College at Bottineau in a game at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
The win, the fifth straight for the Lady Royals, improved LRSC to 4-1 in the Mon-Dak Conference and 13-7 on the season. The Lumberjacks, meanwhile, fell to 1-3 in the conference and 12-11 on the season.
“A win is a win is a win,” LRSC coach Duane Schwab said following Monday’s game.
But it was Krueger who stole the show this night.
The five-foot, five-inch sophomore from Hope, N.D. had perhaps her best game of the season as she recovers from a foot injury suffered early in the season.
Exhibit A: midway through the first half Kruger gained control of the ball in the backcourt and threaded a picture-perfect pass long upcourt to a streaking teammate Melanie Russell. The pass hit Russell in stride and the result was an easy layup that put LRSC 18-3 with 10:34 remaining in the half.
Exhibit B: Krueger, while driving to the basket, tripped and tosses up a prayer that was answered as the shot fell through to push the LRSC lead to 28-12.
Exhibit C: Krueger replays her earlier pass, this time hitting Steph Mertens for an easy layup at LRSC moved its lead to 32-12.
In all, Krueger finished with eight points in the game, seven of which came in the first half. She also led the Lady Royals with 11 rebounds and seven assists in the game.
Jenna Gillett led three LRSC players in double figures with 17 points. Russell and Haley Luond both finished with 10 points.
The Lumberjacks, who shot just 15.6 percent from the floor in the first half, were paced by Shakira Walker’s 16 points. Jackie Miller and Kayla Nelson added 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Lake Region returns to action on Thursday when the Lady Royals travel to Bismarck to take on United Tribes. LRSC returns home on Monday in a key Mon-Dak game against North Dakota State College of Science.
