What a difference a half makes.
Lake Region State College could do few things right over the first 20 minutes of play in its game against Dakota College at Bottineau on Monday at the Devils Lake Sports Center.
The second half was a much different story as the Royals overcame a 45-41 deficit en route to a 96-84 win over the Lumberjacks.
The win improved Lake Region to 3-2 in Mon-Dak Conference play and upped the Royals’ record to 11-9 on the season. Dakota College at Bottineau dropped to 0-4 in the conference and is now 8-14 on the year.
Alex Herman, making just the second start of his collegiate career, sparked that comeback. His free throws with just over 13 minutes left in the game, gave LRSC a 59-58 lead that the Royals would never relinquish the rest of the way.
Herman’s free throws also started a 19-8 run that would push the Lake Region lead to 76-66 with seven minutes to go in the game.
Dakota College at Bottineau would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
LRSC coach Curt Herman also praised the play of Kasheef Festus in the second half as being critical for the impressive turnaround by his Royals.
“(Festus) started to move and get in position to do the things we expect of him,” said Herman, who said his team’s performance in the second half was the result of making extra passes on offense and finding the open shooter.
Furnell Doster led the Royals with 24 points and was one of four players to reach double figures in scoring. Herman added a career-high 18 points, including a perfect five of five from the foul line, and Festus ended the game with 16 points. Zaahir Smith chipped in with 11 points.
Doster also led the Royals with 12 rebounds and four assists in the game. LRSC outrebounded the Lumberjacks 41-29.
The Lumberjacks were led by Australian Jayden McMillan, who matched Doster for game-high honors, with 24 points. Three other players also reached double figures for the Lumberjacks. James Odneal scored 17 points and Jeremy Chamber added 16 points. Former North Dakota Mr. Basketball Cameron Malzer finished with 10 points, despite connecting on just four of 15 shots from the floor for the Lumberjacks.
Lake Region will play at United Tribes on Thursday in Bismarck and will return to the Devils Lake Sports Center on Monday when the Royals play at key Mon-Dak Conference game against North Dakota State College of Science.
