LEEDS, N.D. — That spark that began when Katelynn Engh gave her team the early lead in its game against Rolette-Wolford turned into a raging inferno by the time the dust had settled.
Engh drained a pair of 3-pointers less than two minutes apart late in fourth quarter and later added a layup that allowed Benson County to pull away from a stubborn Rolette-Wolford team and secure a 56-50 win over the Comets on Thursday in Leeds.
The win allows the Wildcats to keep pace with North Star as the two teams battle for the top spot in the District 8 standings.
North Star owns a win over Benson County earlier this year.
“We had the perfect plays called,” said Engh, “ ... I was just fortunate enough to get the shots to fall when we needed them to fall.”
The Wildcats needed Engh’s heroics down the stretch as standouts Sara Schwanke and Becca Eberle were both battling foul trouble with four fouls each in the fourth quarter and the Benson County offense had difficulty getting untracked much of the night.
“We had trouble getting our passes where they needed to go,” BC coach Kent Neppl said, “and when we did get them there ... the shots didn’t seem to want to fall.”
All but Engh’s shots.
Her big fourth quarter allowed the Wildcats to gain some breathing room over the Comets, who, despite, being held to just five points in the third quarter, hung around and trailed by just two points before Engh’s first 3-pointer in the period from the right wing. She added another from the top of the key before her layup from the left side that virtually sealed the win for the Wildcats who are now 9-3 on the season.
Engh finished with a game-high 21 points and was one of three Benson County players to reach double figures. Schwanke and Eberle finished with 14 and 11 points, respectively, despite sitting out a large portion of the game with foul troubles.
Annie Jorgenson added six points in the winning effort and teammates Meghan Jorgenson and McKenzie Silliman each chipped in with two points.
Rolette-Wolford, which fell to 5-6 on the season with the loss, was paced by Taylor Armstrong’s 12 points. Kaylee Scott added nine points while Kenday Martinson and Allison Slaubaugh both neeted seven points.
