Two additional dates have been set for Devils Lake City Commission Meetings to update the public on area flooding. March 22 and March 29 meetings are both set at noon in City  Hall.
Ordinarily the commission meets the first and third Mondays of the month, however, given the rapidly changing circumstances in area flooding, the commissioners have established meetings on the alternate Mondays for the specific purpose of addressing the water and flooding situation.
At Mondays regularly scheduled meeting Carissa Olson from the city’s Tobacco-Free Committee gave the commissioners an update on their efforts to collect signatures showing what support is present for the city to consider going smoke free.
She informed them of a community forum planned for March 30 in the Chautauqua Gallery at LRSC to discuss the issue.
Curtis Johnson, who farms in the Tolna area, asked if it would be possible to come to an arrangement where he could use some of the city’s land located adjacent to his property for pasture.
After much discussion, the commissioners decided to look into it and determine if it would be possible or not.
Gary Martinson informed the commission that he had found a consultant to aid the city in the relocation efforts needed for the embankment project.
Mike Grafsgaard told the commissioners that work was progressing this week on the city’s water treatment plant as precast panels were being placed by a large crane at the site. The plant should be fully operational by this fall and the remaining landscaping and so on will be completed the following year.
Grafsgaard also told the commissioners that work was progressing on the embankment project with storm sewer pipe being put in as they will be eliminating the Eagle Bend pump station.
He told the commissioners that one of the meetings coming up needs to deal with the MOU covering the Acorn Ridge project. They need to iron out who is going to pay for what and be responsible for what with that project.
Other business
Until further notice, the city’s garbage service will be from the curb until the alleys dry up.
A fireworks permit was approved for David Freidig.
Four members were re-appointed to the Historic Preservation Commission.
One person was appointed to the Lake Region Public Library Board.
An amendment to the 2010 Budget for the Lake Region Public Library was approved.
Payment of estimate No. 6 to PKG Contracting for the water treatment plant and work done to date was also approved.
