This weekend will be a perfect time to visit Sullys Hill National Game Preserve as they present their first ever Warbler Weekend Saturday May 22 and Sunday May 23.
Celebrate Warbler Weekend and the return of the beautiful spring warblers to Sullys Hill National Game Preserve on Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23, 2010.  Warbler Weekend also recognizes the endangered and threatened bird species of North Dakota as an official Endangered Species Day program.  Activities will include morning bird walks, educational programs, and bird crafts and activities.  All ages and skill levels are welcome.  Admission is free to Sullys Hill for all visitors who attend Warbler Weekend.
Warbler Weekend will kick off a long-term bird survey of Sullys Hill National Game Preserve led by you- our visitors!  The diverse habitats of Sullys Hill attract over 250 species of birds annually. Sullys Hill is an oasis in the middle of a large expanse of grassland and cropland in eastern North Dakota.  Many bird species stop here only briefly on their migration north.
Refuge Manager Tom Ibsen explains, “With over 1,600 acres, it is impossible for the small number of staff here to keep an eye out for every bird species that visits Sullys Hill over the year.  We hope that visitors can help us accurately record these visits as they hike the nature trail or drive the auto tour.”
Observations gathered from visitors will be entered into a database to determine which bird species visit when and in what areas of the preserve.  This information will help guide land-management decisions at Sullys Hill to ensure that appropriate habitat is maintained throughout the preserve.
Warbler Weekend will attract birders from across the region to begin this bird study at Sullys Hill. Self-directed bird walks will begin at 6 a.m.  and follow on the hour or as groups of interested birders gather.  Binoculars will be available for visitors to check out during the morning hikes.
An educational program on the endangered whooping crane and least tern and the threatened piping plover will begin at 10 a.m. following the bird walks.  Family-friendly activities and crafts will take place until 3 p.m. both days.
Contact the visitor center at 701-766-4272 for more information about Warbler Weekend or how you can get involved in the bird survey throughout the year.
