A familiar face is seeking a return to the Devils Lake Park Board.
Mike Frykman says he'll run for one of the seats on the board available in this year's election.
He's a veteran of some previous stints on the board, which started in 1993.
Frykman was appointed that year to fill an unexpired term, and then ran for election and won a spot.
Later he ran for re-election and lost to Rob Kueneman. A month and a half later Frykman was appointed to fill Kueneman's term when he moved to Fargo.
A few years ago he lost in an election, but now he is looking to run again. That result was both surprising and disappointing, he said, and he vowed at the time to run again.
“I still have some goals for the Park Board, and one of them is more improvements at Ruger Park,” Frykman says.
Frykman said he supports the remodeling job the board did at Burdick Arena, even though it was costly.
But it was something that was needed and had to be done.
Another project that may be coming, he says, is enclosing the new outdoor rink that was recently built adjacent to Burdick Arena.
“Because of the demand for ice time, I think it has to be done,” Frykman added.
“Then I'd like to see the Bill Jerome Arena become a public skating rink, especially in the evening. And then the other two rinks could be used for hockey.”
Frykman is a veteran of Park Board affairs and has a keen interest in the issues, even though he's been bounced around a bit in elections.
He's persistent and he is dedicated.
“And I'm glad to see some of the younger people becoming involved,” he added. “They bring new ideas.”
Frykman works as an EMT with Lake Region Ambulance Service and with Hoiberg's Office Supply in Devils Lake.
He's 62 years of age.
