With another school year looming about six weeks away, Devils Lake Superintendent Steve Swiontek says things are in good shape.
The financial footing of the school is solid and all staff positions are filled.
There were 12 openings for the coming year, and all are filled, including a couple of “hard-to-find” counseling positions.
Two new administrators have also come on board. Jason Wiberg is the school’s new activities director, and Dale Weegman is the new director of the Lake Area Career and Technology Center.
Wiberg replaces Kent Dennis, and Weegman takes over for Jeanne O’Gorman. O’Gorman held the post for the past two years on an interim basis.
“Our facilities should be in good shape for the beginning of another year too,” Swiontek says. “Sweetwater might be a concern for being ready, however.”
Extensive work is taking place at the Central Middle School as well. New locker room doors have been installed, and the girls locker room completely gutted and renovated.
For the first time since it opened in 1980, the bleachers at the Sports Center will be replaced.
Swiontek said he was especially gratified with the enrollment projections.
Kindergarten enrollment looks like about 125 youngsters, and the rest of the numbers seem to be reversing the steady decline of recent years.
“We’re really looking forward to the coming year,” Devils Lake’s top administrator said.
It will be the Devils Lake school’s 127th year overall.
