The city of Devils Lake is one step closer to enacting a smoking ordinance for all indoor public places, including bars.
At Monday’s meeting they discussed the sample ordinance from Grand Forks looking at language and content. Before it goes to the advisory vote of the people this fall, it is the commission’s duty to establish the wording on the ordinance, so voters can decide if they are for it or against it. During the discussion of the ordinance, the commissioners decided that they would set a deadline of August to have the wording the way they want it in time for getting it on the ballot.
After the vote, if the people vote that they are for the ordinance, then will come the public hearings and two readings of the ordinance before it becomes law.
Visitor Mark Vining addressed the commission on the matter asking them to allow bar goers to make their own decisions about smoking.
Other business at the meeting addressed the commission portfolios, bid openings and a bid award, the consent agenda and new business: A cost participation and maintenance agreement with the NDDOT for ND Highway 20 grade raise, payments for work accomplished at the Water Treatment Plant, a programmatic agreement between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the ND State Historic Preservation Officer regarding the Devils Lake Flood Risk Management Project and a request for a $1,000 donation for the city’s fireworks display for the Fourth of July.
