It opened its doors on April 4, 1910, and although 100 years later it no longer serves its original purpose, the impressive building located at 502 4th St. NE has found new life as the Old Post Office Museum.
To mark this anniversary a number of special events are planned in the building starting on Monday, April 5 at 5 p.m. with an open house.
Featured at the museum will be Devils Lake High School drama students portraying historical characters and guiding visitors on their tour of the museum’s displays.
Postmaster Jeff Olson will be there giving a presentation and overseeing the special cancellation centennial stamp designed for the occasion.
Local artists, young and old, have the opportunity at the open house to design a stamp that also will be issued in honor of the event.
The Lake Region Heritage Foundation will be selling post office boxes, a five-year lease for $50. Renters can have the name of their choice engraved on the box’s nameplate.
Hot dogs and chips will be served and later, at 7 p.m. Rick LaFleur and Steve Swiontek will be doing a special presentation.
There are many other special appearances and events planned, including a real trial to be held in the Old Post Office’s courtroom.
Continuing the celebration, the board of the Lake Region Heritage Center has planned “Mondays at the Museum” which will take place at 7 p.m. the remaining Mondays in April. Special guest speakers will appear as themselves or perhaps portraying a person from Devils Lake’s past. The topics are wide and varied, from the most notorious murder to occur in Devils Lake to refined ladies of the city’s past, like Lillian Weinman.
Perhaps while visiting the museum you’ll catch a glimpse of the ghost some say lives there, too - you never know who might show up.
