A truck driver lost control and crashed into two parked vehicles before coming to a stop in Dunseith on Monday. Another truck driver also ended up in the ditch while trying to avoid the accident.
According to a report from the N.D. Highway Patrol, Landon Smith, 62, of Wimbledon, ND, was driving a 2008 Volvo semi southbound on US Highway 281 about 10 p.m. on Monday, While negotiating a curve downhill, Smith began jackknifing. He entered the west ditch and onto a private driveway, where he struck a 1999 Dodge Ram pickup, owned by Jay Vanorny of Dunseith. The truck continued on to hit a parked 1991 Chevrolet pickup before coming to rest.
Gary Mason, 46, of Jamestown, was driving a 2010 Peterbilt semi at the same time and noticed Smith's departure from the roadway. He attempted to reduce his speed, causing his truck to jackknife and slide into the ditch.
Both truck drivers were transported to Presentation Medical Center in Rolla. Mason was then transported to Trinity Medical Center in Minot.
The crash remains under investigation.
